Al's History & Bio: 50 years as a Professional Crappie Guide

Al Hamilton's Reelfoot Lake Guide Service is Open for Business year around

Ask me what business I'm in and my reply will be, “my business is Crappie fishing and business is gooooood!”  The line might not be original, but I sure am. You can call me Al.  After 50 years of Crappie Fishing on Reelfoot Lake fishing is my full-time job around.

I offer  fishing trips to anyone who wants to get away from the world for a while and "cast their cares" away.   I  provide clients with an opportunity to forget about work, or school, or sickness or any other problem and just enjoy themselves for a moment, because we’re only here for a moment. My business philosophy revolves around the golden rule.  Treat customers as you wish to be treated.  I will provide the kind of experience that I would expect to receive on a guided fishing trip—and I have very high expectations.

My office is located on banks of Reelfoot Lake the place I learned to fishing for over 50 years. Located in Samburg, Tennessee on the banks of Reelfoot Lake.   Just West of Union City, Tennessee and in Northwest Tennessee.  My office hours are “from first light ‘til last bite!”  And I am open for "bid-ness" to catch Slab Crappie all year.  Location:  Reelfoot Lake Guide Service - 129 Lakeview Drive - Samburg, Tennessee 38254 - Ph Cell # 731-446-3990

Native Guide on Reelfoot Lake for 50 years

Reelfoot Lake  Crappie

Al started his career as a native guide on Reelfoot Lake at the age of 13 years. History has it that his first fishing trip was as a boy of a young age of 7 years old along the shoreline of Buck Basin in the middle section of Reelfoot Lake. Later he guided during the spring & summer months for crappie, bass and bluegill growing up at Reelfoot Lake working at his fathers resort & marina. Al is a 5th generation native professional guide on Reelfoot Lake. His family has been in the area since around 1820.

He worked as a professional duck hunting and fishing guide for several years while going to college, purchased a local marina & resort in the late 1970's, as a Reelfoot Marina owner and as a Professional Guide, he was a pioneer in the development of the spider rigging technique used by old time Reelfoot Lake guides. Development of the Reelfoot Lake spider rigging slow trolling method was in it's early stages and development in the late 1960's to the early 1980's. Al was very instrumental in the making the spider rigging method known in the southeastern United States and world wide. No other place used this type of crappie fishing method that was developed at Reelfoot Lake, Tennessee in the 1960's .

Al Hamilton is a legend in Crappie & Bass Fishing at Reelfoot Lake. He is a pioneer in the slow troll method for crappie fishing on Reelfoot Lake. He was a favorite source on information for articles in Bassmaster, Sports Afield, Outdoor Life, Tennessee Sportsman, Peterson's Hunting, Duck Unlimited Magazines on the subject of Crappie, Bluegill, Bass and Waterfowl Hunting at Reelfoot Lake. His specialty now days is vertical jig and slow spider rig fishing for big slab Black & White Crappie on Reelfoot Lake and the Mississippi River.

Few knew more about what he called slow trolling for big slab crappie using a spider rig than Al Hamilton, yet he excelled at catching Largemouth Bass too. In his brief career as a touring bass fisherman in the 1970's & 1980s, he won several tournaments on Reelfoot Lake, Kentucky Lake & Lake Barkley. In 1980, he and five other bass fisherman from Tennessee won the Bassmaster's World Championship Team tournament competing against 39 other states and three (3) foreign countries at Lake O' of the Cherokees in Oklahoma.
